East Coventry Updates

On Monday, CreekHead member Sami Houry shared images on the Save Nose Creek Facebook page of the East Coventry ridge being terraformed. The images were concerning and many were sad to see the hillside just dug away. 

Earlier this year, in a meeting with owners of the land, West Creek Development, we were assured they would be preserving the slopes. And any work would not occur until after they received permission from City Council. After reaching out to the owners on Monday, they assured us they were not responsible for the work and were unaware of any digging that was happening on their land. 

Councillor Yule also commented on the Facebook post that he was not aware of this project and reached out to city administration, taking couple of days to get answers. His office has provided this update.

CityNews reached out to the NCPS to ask how this was affecting our society’s advocacy. In the interview, Council Lead, Crystal Perzylo-Reynolds, shared that the situation is an example of how the City of Calgary continues to fail to communicate with Calgarians. 

While this digging is apparently a necessary infrastructure project, we would love to have notification of this type of thing. These slopes are a cherished part of our valley, home to native plants and animals and many well-worn pathways and we’d love to know what the extent of the project is, how long it will take and if the land will be returned to its previous state. With so much planned development happening in the next few years, our aim, as always, is to speak for the Nose Creek, and the Nose Creek Valley as a whole, ensuring as much preservation as possible.

Since Monday, the project had been put on hold while the city and landowner work through next steps. An email/statement was provided by West Creek Developments today, if you aren’t on their mailing list you can read it here.
