So Many Nose Creek Events Coming Up!

With the Prairie Crocus in full bloom, we’ve got four events happening in the next week to tell you about!

1 ➔ Balzac BioBlitz
Friday, April 25 @ 3:00 PM

Compete for Calgary in the City Nature Challenge, a worldwide annual event where the Metropolitan Calgary Area competes against other cities to see who can make the most nature observations. In collaboration with CityNatureYYC, we are hosting a BioBlitz in the Balzac area of Nose Creek to help boost those numbers.

What is a BioBlitz? It’s a gentle walk through nature, where you can make observations of the plants, animals, and insects that live there. Join us by downloading the iNaturalist App and starting an account ahead of the event. We can help you learn how to use the app during the tour.

CrossIron Mills Mall has graciously allowed us to park in their parking lot for this event. We will be parking in the Northwest corner of their parking lot, nearest to the crosswalk to Nose Creek. Please use caution when crossing Bass Pro Way.

The Tour is approximately 3.5 km long, utilizing the existing Pathway System, making it comfortable for most mobility levels. Please dress for the weather. We expect the tour to take about an hour, but we will return to the starting point halfway through for anyone who may need to exit early.

2 ➔ Creek Watch Training

Citizen Scientists Needed!

If you want to be a part of Creek Watch, join us for training and the first Creek Watch session this season. The team meets weekly throughout the Spring and Summer and into the Fall to track the health of Nose Creek. We have been testing water and sampling invertebrates at the creek for the last two years using a set of simple test kits provided by the RiverWatch Institute of Alberta’s CreekWatch program.

All equipment and instructions are provided, so bring a pair of your favourite rubber boots and let’s explore the creek together!

Aurora ASP, Apr 29 + May 1

Speak for Nose Creek!

The City of Calgary is returning with their newest revision to the Aurora Area Structure Plan. We continue to encourage Creek-Heads to request MORE green space in this development. You can read our proposal here.

There are two primary concerns we have regarding the development in this area.

The nesting Western Meadowlarks in the Grasslands
A recent discovery of a Plains Garter Snake Hibernaculum in the Valley.

Both of these are rare throughout the Calgary Region and could be lost to development.

We believe that an ASP with a majority of the land allocated to green space is crucial for the biodiversity and history of this area.

4 ➔ West Nose Creek Jane’s Walk

The Panorama Residents Association has been closely following our organization. This year, they have asked us to host their annual Jane’s Walk. Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free neighbourhood walking tours held every May around the world, encouraging people to share stories and insights about the places they know well. Our President, Andrew Yule, will lead the 3 km walking tour along the Nose Creek pathway.

This walk offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich history and natural environment of Nose Creek. Starting at the West Nose Creek Park gravel parking lot, along Harvest Hills Blvd, participants will learn:
